Long Island Electrical Contracting Company Proudly Provides Second Donation to Food Bank

Posted on: January 26th, 2021 by Judy DeBlase

America continues to fight the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as we approach the one-year mark since it initially appeared on our shores. Beyond the tragic global death toll, the ramifications of this virus have included lost jobs, lost income, lost opportunities and uncertainty about making ends meet. There are some bright spots on the horizon and Eldor, an electrical contracting company headquartered in Holtsville, New York, is stepping up once again to help the community it serves.

Following up on a significant contribution of $15,000 to food security operation Long Island Cares, Eldor has doubled down and given another $5,000 to Long Island Cares/The Harry Chapin Food Bank. While Eldor is primarily focused on keeping business moving forward, company officials recognize that no one should go hungry during this crisis, either. “Your donation of $5,000 will provide 6,750 pounds of food and 5,600 meals to Long Islanders in need,” Shawn Hirst, corporate philanthropy and events manager for Long Island Cares, told Eldor. “We are so grateful for your ongoing support.”

Long Island Cares was founded by late Grammy Award-winner and social activist Harry Chapin. It was also the first food bank on Long Island when it opened in 1980. Currently, the organization aids roughly 580 other agencies and works to distribute six million pounds of food each year. In his letter to Eldor, Hirst further characterized the $5,000 donation as “very generous” and says it will go to great use as the food bank works toward its Hunger Free Long Island initiative. According to the Long Island Cares website, one out of every four Long Islanders faces food insecurity and more than 40 percent of Suffolk County residents do not qualify for state and federal assistance programs. “Because they are unable to register for nutrition assistance program like SNAP, more than 63,000 Long Islanders don’t have enough support to put food on the table,” according to Long Island Cares. Having already seen a spike in food insecurity between 2019 and 2020, upcoming statistics showing the leap between 2020 and 2021 will be sobering.

Eldor’s electrical, renewable energy, transportation, communication and transmission-related services help ensure comfort and safety across the Long Island region. Safe and timely services are backed up by quality workmanship that’s carried out by highly-trained staff in the field. It’s this type of hard work that Eldor does, day in and day out, that gives us first-hand knowledge of the hardships our neighbors are going through. The recent $5,000 gift will go toward putting food on plates and in pantries — and that’s an important accomplishment. Long Island Cares offers a wide variety of services that aim to help disaster victims, seniors, veterans, pets and those experiencing hunger. Substantial Donation from Long Island Electrical Contracting Company to Aid Region’s Needy

Posted on: June 23rd, 2020 by Judy DeBlase

Budget-tightening measures by households across Long Island reached a fever pitch during spring 2020. The ongoing global health crisis forced millions of Americans to double down on savings efforts wherever possible due to fears about their health, housing and employment prospects.

With this shared sacrifice in mind, the Holtsville, New York-headquartered electrical contracting company Eldor recently made a significant contribution to food security operation Long Island Cares.

Stepping Up to the Plate

The May 5 donation of $15,000 from Eldor to Long Island Cares came with best wishes from the entire team, “including many employees that live and work on Long Island,” according to a joint letter signed by Nicolaus Feldmann, Kurt Feldmann and Keith Feldmann, Eldor’s president and vice presidents, respectively.  The letter from Eldor that accompanied the $15,000 donation also shares the electrical company’s hope that Long Island Cares will use the funds to continue its mission of serving the hungry, “especially during these tough times.”

Indeed, Long Island Cares has seen its need skyrocket during the past few months and its vision of a hunger-free Long Island became a call to arms during the COVID-19 crisis. On its social media page, the Hauppauge, New York non-profit group has shared photos of volunteers preparing thousands of boxes of food to be delivered to those facing food insecurity. Recent local news articles have also highlighted efforts by Long Island Cares, including the rapid opening of an emergency food bank in Glen Cove to help those struggling in Nassau County.

Serving the Same Community

The present need at the local level is undeniable and Eldor is proud to operate alongside a group as charitable as Long Island Cares, which has a rich history of stepping up to the plate when New Yorkers are hungry. The non-profit was founded in 1980 by late Grammy Award-winner and social activist, Harry Chapin. It was the first food bank on Long Island at that time and has since grown to support some 580 other member agencies and helps to distribute six million pounds of food annually. Despite these best efforts, the need remains: Statistics show that “74 percent of the Long Island households served by emergency food programs” are also food-insecure and 39 percent of those on Long Island who receive food donations are under the age of 18. With heads of household sidelined by the coronavirus, now is the time to step and help those who make ends meet; Eldor saw it fit to accomplish exactly that.

Eldor has been synonymous with electrical jobs on Long Island since its founding in the late 1970s and current projects come from the private, government and corporate sectors. Today, the company that is comprised of both an electrical division and solar energy arm provides services across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. As an essential business, during the pandemic Eldor continues to provide its important electrical infrastructure services to various clients within its geographic footprint.

In its letter to Long Island Cares, Eldor goes on to thank the non-profit for all its efforts. It is this shared sense of responsibility that will allow those living on Long Island to weather the current storm while not having to worry about where their next meal is coming from.

Eldor Electric Powers up NYPD’s Oldest Precinct – Central Park 22nd Precinct

Posted on: October 19th, 2012 by admin

College Point, NY…

sm_EldorCentralParkPrecinctEldor Electric, LLC (College Point, NY, www.eldor.com), one of the New York-Tri-State area’s largest electrical construction and renewable energy companies, played an important role as the electrical contractor in the historic renovation of the 28,000 square foot New York Police Department’s (NYPD) Central Park 22nd Precinct. The stationhouse is located in the original Central Park stable complex at 86th Street and Transverse Road in New York City. The stables were designed in 1871 by noted Architect Jacob Wrey Mould, who also was the chief architect for Central Park. URS Corporation (New York, NY), a leading provider of engineering, construction and technical services for public agencies and private sector companies worldwide, served as the Construction Manager at Risk for the $50 million renovation project. Fred Basch, AIA served as the project’s architect. Barbara Spandorf, AIA, LEED AP, Project Director, Police Unit, New York City Department of Design & Construction (DDC) led the DDC in providing oversight for the entire renovation which consisted of converting a single-story building with an attic into a two-story facility. Required was the replacement of all electrical, mechanical and plumbing infrastructures, and the retrofit and build-out of the structure’s interior.

The NYPD Central Park precinct has been in operation since 1936 and has both a national and New York City landmark status. This meant that the restoration project had to uphold the structural integrity and historic significance of the building, while also accommodating the NYPD’s needs for a more modern facility.

Eldor brought in a new electrical service to power all of the precinct’s lighting, electrical, telecommunications, teledata, information technology, and security systems, and rehabilitated all electrical components. Tight integration of the electrical and mechanical systems into the building’s structure was critical.  The main challenge Eldor faced was in bringing the main electrical service all the way from Fifth Avenue down through the center of Central Park along 86th Street and into the precinct building which is located in the middle of the park along the Great Lawn. To perform the necessary work, 86th Street had to be shut down every night and opened again every morning.  During the course of its work, Eldor also encountered an old New York City trolley track system and an old water main which introduced unique challenges to the project.

Heading up Eldor’s team for the NYPD Central Park Precinct project were:  Project Manager Marc Raineri, Project Superintendent George Maresciallo and Foreman Nelson Ramos.

The Central Park Police Precinct project was hailed as a success in effectively meeting all of the NYPD’s requirements, while retaining and respecting the building’s historical significance. As a result, the Central Park Police Precinct was awarded The New York Landmark Conservancy’s prestigious “Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award.”  It is the Conservancy’s highest honor for outstanding preservation efforts.

The renovated Central Park Police Precinct now features a modern facility housing spacious offices, locker rooms, muster room, an area for processing suspects and storage space. The building design encompasses a lightweight metal canopy which spans the courtyard and a clear story façade of bullet-resistant glass. The lobby was designed to create synergy between the building’s interior and the surrounding outdoor setting. The projected lifetime for the building is 80 years.

Posted on: October 9th, 2012 by admin

Holtsville, NY…

sm_EldorMANHASSETEldor Contracting Corporation (Holtsville, NY, www.eldor.com), one of the New York-Tri-State area’s largest electrical contracting construction and renewable energy companies, recently completed a renewable energy project for the Manhasset Union Free School District (UFSD).  Eldor installed a 7KW photovoltaic system at the Manhasset Secondary School’s concession stand. The project was funded through a $29,250 grant from CBS EcoMedia Inc., a subsidiary of CBS Corporation (Manhattan Beach, CA, ecomedia.cbs.com), an organization which sells advertisements to companies and uses a portion of its proceeds to provide grants for projects benefitting the environment. Serving as the architect and owner’s representative for the project was John A. Grillo Architect, PC (Port Jefferson, NY, www.jagarchitect.com).

The Manhasset UFSD was selected as a grant recipient based on its ongoing commitment to saving energy and reducing energy costs. Instrumental in securing the grant was Armand G. Markarian, PE, Director of Facilities for the Manhasset UFSD. He projected the entire project costs to be covered by the grant funds and rebates from the local power authority, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). Over the past two years, the Manhasset UFSD completed energy saving projects reflecting energy savings of over $3.3 million. These projects were funded through an energy performance contract approved by the Board of Education in 2009.

In its role for the Manhasset UFSD’s photovoltaic system project, Eldor provided its photovoltaic system design services and electrical construction services. Additionally, Eldor   managed all coordination with LIPA. This was not Eldor’s first project for the Manhasset UFSD. The company was also contracted in 2009 for another  project.

Eldor Contracting Corporation Energizes Fifth Solar Carport for Suffolk County – Part of a 12.82-Megawatt, $65 Million Solar Project

Posted on: August 17th, 2012 by admin

Holtsville, NY…

sm_EldorSolarCarportCohalanEldor Contracting Corporation (Holtsville, NY, www.eldor.com), one of the New York-Tri-State area’s largest electrical construction and renewable energy companies, announced today that it has successfully completed the fifth solar carport in its 12.82-megawatt (MW), 45,000 solar module project located in Suffolk County, New York. Eldor was brought on board the expansive solar carport project by EDF Renewable Energy, formerly enXco (San Diego, CA, www.edf-re.com), a leader in renewable energy. The installations required Eldor’s turnkey construction management, general contracting and electrical contracting services, as well as its widely-recognized value engineering capabilities. The company’s responsibilities in this $65 million renewable energy project –among the nation’s largest solar carport installations — also include the commissioning, telemetry and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) activities for gathering real time data to monitor, analyze and control environmental conditions at the installations.

According to Eldor Project Manager Keith Feldmann, “The Suffolk County solar carports include our rigging into place: 22, 500-kw inverters, 22 medium-voltage step-up transformers, and seven medium-voltage switchgear lineups. We have been working closely with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) to effectively coordinate the interconnection of the medium-voltage switchgear to the power grid.”

Being constructed on public properties in Suffolk County, the solar PV facilities are being interconnected to LIPA’s grid.  The energy produced by EDF Renewable Energy will then be purchased by LIPA. It is estimated that 12.82-MW of electricity can power approximately homes.

To date, Eldor has completed four solar carports at the Brentwood train station, H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge, Suffolk County’s North County Complex in Hauppauge, and a Suffolk County owned-building in Riverhead.
